Things to see and do in Barcaldine

Australian Workers Heritage Centre

This centre pays tribute to working Australians who built this nation. Recognised as the national monument to our workers and described by many as the unsung wonder of the outback. The centre was first opened in 1991. Designed for the weary traveller, it provides beautifully landscaped gardens including picnic and barbeque facilities, a unique gift shop and children's playground all on 2 acres. Open seven days a week.

Tree of Knowledge Memorial

During the shearers strike in 1891 a large ghost gum in the centre of Barcaldine became an important meeting place for the striking shearers and grewin folklore to become known as the "Tree of Knowledge", the tree was poisoned by an unknown culprit in May of 2006. The tree was then taken to Brisbane to undergo a world first preservation procedure and then returned to original site, where the memorial was then constructed.

Barcaldine & District Folk Museum

The museum is home to a collection of memorabilia from the early days in and around Barcaldine. The museum building was the former National Bank building built in 1906. A five inch steam train track has been built and runs on the last Sunday of the month from March to October.

Comet Masonic Lodge

The Comet Lodge has had an interesting and very well travelled history. The first building that housed the Masonic Temple was shifted no less than 6 times before it finally came to settle in Barcaldine. First opened at Dingo Creek in 1876, the lodge then moved to Cometville, Emerald, Bogantungan, Pinehill, Jericho and finally to Barcaldine. In 1901 the current building was erected. Built in much the same style as its predecessor it did however have two additional glamorous features. The front of the building although constructed of iron, was painted with façade to make it look like brick. A small book porch was also added. This gave the building a very unique appearance.

Lloyd Jones Weir

The weir was built in 1952-53 and was first filled in 1954. It is situated 5 km along the Blackall Road and then 9km down Barcaldine Downs Road. The scenic area offers picnic facilities with wood-fired bbqs, covered rest area and shady eucalyptus trees. The weir is also a popular swimming and water sports venue in the wet season.
